Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America

Essays written and works collected by Phyllis Kornfeld, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1997

All illustrations, observations and quotations are taken from Kornfelds direct contact with inmates in various prisons throughout the States including Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Some illustrations are accompanied directly by prisoners writings, others from her own conversations with the inmates. Kornfeld notes that while the regional location of the prisons does not effect the artwork produced the ethnic or religious heritage of those incarcerated seems to surface.

The institutions range from County Jails to Death Row.
