The original version of the City of Sun, written in Italian in 1602, did not appear in print until the first years of the 20th century. For a period it circulated in manuscript, and some fifteen copies have been located. Far better known was a Latin translation Campanella completed in 1613 at the request of a German admirer, Tobia Adami, who felt that in that form it would attract a larger audience. Entitled Civitas Solis, this version was published in Frankfurt in 1623. Under Campanella's own supervision it was reprinted in Paris in 1637 forming a small part of his voluminous Philosophia realis. [...] (introduction, p.19ff.)
