William Caxton published a first version of Le Morte Darthur in 1485 which was the only version read until 1934, when the 'Winchester Manuscript' was discovered. Both however are thought to differ from the original text which is yet to be discovered.
It is thought that Malory began to write this book at the time of his second imprisonment (1468-70) in Newgate prison, London, under the original title “the whole book of King Arthur and his noble knights of the Round Table”.
